Just got back from a weekend in SF in which I did more socializing than I do in about 2 months in Orange County. Overall a great time.
Weather - awful. Not sure if I could hang with it. Changes way too much and generally its not pleasant. Saturday it was sunny and balmy, everyone was out and it was cool. Then the fog rolled in at night and it was freezing. I immediately felt less energized. Maybe its just me but that vitamin D gets the blood flowing.
Girls - noticeably more personable and intelligent than in southern california. sat down next to a table of early 20 year olds at this beer garden and proceeded to talk to them for the next few hours about all sorts of things, mainly traveling. This would never happen in Socal, never. maybe one or two would be engaging but the whole group was in this instance. Also approaching strangers and striking up conversation is not seen as strange and is painless. I’m a schmoozer so thats important. They are also less attractive and concerned with appearance. Take that for what it means to you.
Guys - really dorky. for some reason lots of my friends live there though. I guess that makes them dorks too. Nice dorks though, not the weird ones that act out attention. I’m off those people.
Transport - the muni trains were packed all weekend so i didnt ride. its convenient having public transport and not sitting in traffic. It sucks to be around the drunks and assorted maniacs who ride it though. Everyone I talked to had some horror story to tell about an experience on muni or bart. Jury is out on this one. The main advantage is most of the city is walkable. I was staying over by Nopa/Dolores park and it seemed like anything you could want was within walking distance and if not certainly cab-able. I can see why the neighborhoods get a bubble mentality and people dont leave their immediate area much.
Entertainment - tons of stuff going on, people are extremely active in that city. I didnt go out a ton but whenever theres that many young people in a confined space its pretty easy to find a good time. There are great museums and there are always festivals or some other social event going on. This is probably the best thing about the city that really makes it tough to come back to Newport where there is shit to do if you dont own a boat.
Work - could not possibly be a place with more going on in the tech field. employment would never be a problem if youre a nerdy or a social worker. outside of those areas its probably tough. Also most companies are not in the city itself but in the surrounding suburbs, which really sucks. If I were to live there it would necessitate a job in the city itself. Commuting is for the birds.
I was able to hang out with like 8 different friends in different places in the two days I was there. You cant really beat that. I guess ultimately who you spend time with is the most important thing. With the right people around anything you do is going to be fun. Right now it would be tough to let go of the sun and sweet lifestyle here in OC so I’m not ready to move yet. But theres always 2012 Until then it will be the quarterly adventures up there for this guy
